Most people travel in Peru without taking Malaria medication and have no problems. The side effects of Malaria medication can be discomforting.

If you decide not to take medication make sure to take all sensible precautions to protect yourself from mosquito bites. The Amazon Basin and Brazilian border regions have a higher Malaria rate. The risk is yours to opt in or out of, but always consult your doctor before taking any medications.

  • The low oxygen levels found at high altitudes can cause problems for travelers going to destinations higher than 8,000 feet (2,438.4 meters) above sea level. The signs of altitude sickness, or ‘soroche’ as it is called in Spanish, are similar to those of a hangover:

    Shortness of breath

    Headache (2-12 hours after arrival)

    Tiredness

    Lack of appetite

    Nausea

    Vomiting

    Restless sleep

    Frequent awakening

Irregular respiratory patterns (alternating between deep and shallow breathing)

    How to prevent altitude sickness:

No alcohol for the first 48 hours; continue caffeine if a regular user.

Drink loads of water instead (water or (coca) tea)

Only mild exercise (this includes walking, especially when it’s uphill) for the first 48 hours.

Have light meals (preferably no meals after 7 pm)

Avoid going directly from a low elevation to more than 9,000 ft. (2,750 m) sleeping elevation in 1 day.

Consider using altitude medications to speed up acclimatization if a quick ascent is unavoidable.

Meet your Retreat hosts

Shelby

Shelby arrived at her yoga practice to find a way to heal her body from chronic pain and to learn how to love her entire self, body and mind. She arrives at her practice each day, on and off of her mat, because she believes that the journey to healing will never be finished and that the best teacher is always a student.

She owns, operates, and instructs at Muni Muni Yoga & Wellness, a hot yoga studio in Vancouver, WA. Currently, she is certified with Yoga Alliance as a  200-hr E-RYT and YACEP. She teach many systems of yoga including, but not limited to: Hot 26, Vinyasa, Yoga Sculpt, Ashtanga, and Yin yoga. She enjoys her life the most when she is sharing her knowledge with fellow students and teachers. She specializes in teaching methodology; anatomy and alignment; modifications, and physical, verbal, and demonstrative adjustments.

She believes we must preserve yogic tradition and continue to find gratitude for the culture that brought us this great practice while also finding new and modern ways to keep yoga strong, healthy, and fun.

Her goal in class and on retreats is to create a safe, welcoming, and supportive space for practitioners to arrive at their practice because inside the four corners of our mat we are all searching for something.

Join Shelby and Lauren as they travel around the world so they can help you find whatever it is you need, whatever it is you want, and hopefully a little bit of peace on your way to discover your True Self.
